Indeed, when exposed to moisture (air or saliva), the mouthpiece develops a natural surface rust with a sweet taste, which stimulates the horse's salivation . This significantly improves the horse's acceptance of the bit .

This controlled oxidation process gives the barrel a brownish-grey tint .
It is normal for traces of oxidation to be visible upon receipt of the bit: this is part of the natural and desired process.
